Truck driver fined $310 for fatal negligent driving crash in Maine last year

A truck driver was fined $310 for a fatal negligent driving crash in Maine last summer after pleading no contest.

54-year-old Steven Hawkes was killed in a crash involving then 35-year-old truck driver Andrew Ouellette in a semi truck on July 12th, 2024 in Conway, New Hampshire along Route 302.

According to Laconia Daily Sun, the negligent driving complaint filed by a trooper with the New Hampshire State Police filing states that  “the defendant did: drive a motor vehicle, a 2022 Peterbilt 389, upon a way, East Main Street in the town of Center Conway, NH, negligently, to wit, the defendant failed to maintain attention to the roadway to such an extent that he was not aware of traffic stopped ahead of him, resulting in a collision, in a manner that endangered or was likely to endanger persons or property.”

Police have since dropped a misdemeanor charge of vehicular assault and a complaint of reckless operation.

In court earlier this month, Ouellette appeared in court and pleaded no contest, resulting in a fine of $310. Ouellette has since paid the fine.

Hawkes’ wife Sylvie says that the family will not pursue a civil case against the truck driver.
