‘Border Czar’ says federal agents are working at weigh stations to catch unqualified CDL drivers

A top Trump administration official said that federal agents are working at weigh stations to catch and remove unqualified commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders from roadways in some states.

On July 7, Border Czar Tom Homan spoke to Fox News in response to a high-profile crash in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, that left Trooper Michael E. Pahira, Jr., 44, dead.

In the days since the crash, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that the involved truck driver, Michael Bon, is a resident of Haiti present in the U.S. illegally. Officials said that Bon received a CDL from the state of Massachusetts.

Homan said that federal authorities are working to identify and crack down on unqualified truck drivers, but he said that the effort is hampered by resistance from blue states.

“It’s a work in progress, because, again, getting information from some of the sanctuary states is a struggle,” Homan said.

“We’re trying to get all this information we can. And we’ve got a lot of it. We’ve got a lot of people we’re looking for. Some states, we’re actually working weigh stations, with the troopers, trying to get these people as they’re coming through,” Homan revealed.

Homan said that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is working with state and local law enforcement, where allowed, to catch immigration violators operating commercial trucks.

More than 28,000 illegal CDLs have been revoked as of May 1, according to a U.S. Department of Transportation figure cited by Fox News

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy also recently responded to the crash involving Bon by vowing to clean up fraud and illegal activity in the trucking industry.

“This 4th of July weekend my thoughts are with the family of this PA state trooper who was killed by an illegal Haitian truck driver. Trooper Pahira was caring for his mom with cancer. These senseless tragedies are why I am working my heart out to change the policies that encouraged illegal drivers, enabled shady trucker schools, and drove down the wages for American truckers,” Duffy said.
