Chain controls in effect in Northern California Sierras

Chain controls are in effect in the Northern California Sierras as rain and snow fall in the region through Thursday. 

The wet weather began on Tuesday, April 21st in many parts of Northern California, and fell as snow in the Sierra mountains through Wednesday morning, April 22nd. 

According to KCRA, snowy conditions are lingering in the Sierra mountains throughout the morning, but are expected to improve by the afternoon. The area may see wet weather again on Thursday. 

As of Wednesday morning, chain controls and speed limit reductions in the Northern California Sierras were in effect. Interstate 80 speeds were adjusted to 30 mph, and Highway 50 speeds were adjusted to 25 mph. 

Eastbound I-80 had chain requirements from Colfax to Truckee. Westbound I-80 had chain requirements from the Donner Lake Interchange until 2.1 miles past Baxter. Highway 88 had chain requirements from Dew Drop to 6.5 miles east of Peddler Hill in Amador. Highway 89 had chain requirements starting 2.7 miles south of the Highway 50 junction to the El Dorado-Alpine County line. These chain controls have been in effect since Tuesday.
