The Michigan Department of Transportation is working to improve roads in and around Detroit with the start of a sinkhole repair project and the final planning stages of a massive $350M overhaul.
Repairs on a sinkhole in the eastbound I-96 local lanes east of M-39 (Southfield Freeway) in Detroit started on Monday, February 2nd and are expected to last through early March. Prep work has started for the $350M overhaul of Interstate 94 from Wayne Road all the way to Schaefer. The 13 mile long project will be completed in two stages, with the first starting at the end of February and lasting through 2028. The second phase of the project will not be completed until 2031.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation, the sinkhole repairs happening now require the following closures until the project is completed in March:
Officials say the initial lane closures of the M-39 ramp to eastbound I-96 caused by the sinkhole will remain in place, and southbound M-39 can only access the ramp to eastbound I-96 express lanes.
Information on the I-94 $350M overhaul project will be presented at two meetings this week, reported WMYD20. The first will be held at 1 p.m. at the Department of Public Services building on Outer Drive. The second will be held on Wednesday, February 4th at 4 p.m. at Taylor City Hall on Goddard Road.
