Human trafficking awareness was spread to more than 700 truck drivers during the CVSA Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative in Indiana earlier this month.
The initiative took place from January 12th-16th as a partnership between the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division and the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance.
The initiative was intended to teach truck drivers, bus drivers, law enforcement, and the public about the signs of human trafficking and what to do if they suspect human trafficking is occurring, reported Eagle Country Online.
During the week-long project, Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement units passed out 1,007 wallet cards, decals, and brochures from Truckers Against Trafficking to 718 truck drivers that had their semi trucks inspected.
Human trafficking often occurs in areas that drivers frequent, such as rest areas and commercial facilities, making them crucial to preventing the incidents. More than 40% of the human trafficking cases directly reported by truckers involve victims that were minors.
