Truck driver facing 10 years for injury to elderly after punching 77-year-old man during road rage

A truck driver is now facing up to 10 years in prison for injury to elderly after punching a 77-year-old man during a road rage incident in the Texas Panhandle.

The incident happened about a year ago at a Love’s Truck Stop near Interstate 40 eastbound and Whitaker Road. The truck driver facing charges for the incident was indicted on April 23rd, 2026 in Potter County, Texas.

According to News Channel 10, police were called to the truck stops on reports of an assault. Officers arrived to find a 77-year-old man with injuries a truck driver named Dennis Eugene Massengill. Massengill told police that the 77-year-old man had cut him off before pulling into the parking lot in front of him. The two men then had a verbal confrontation before the physical fight ensued.

Massengill told police that the 77-year-old man threw the first punch, but footage from Massengill’s dash cam and security footage from the truck stop showed that Massengill initiated the physical fight.

While officers were inside of the store watching the security footage, Massengill left the scene. Police eventually located him and he was booked into county jail. He has since posted $15,000 bond. It is unclear if the 77-year-old man was a motorist or another truck driver.

Massengill was indicted yesterday on charges of injury to elderly – a third degree felony that carries a fine of up to $10,000 and up to 10 years in prison.
