Roadcheck 2023 CMV blitz to emphasize ABS violations, cargo securement

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has released new information about the upcoming high-visibility three day International Roadcheck inspection effort.

This year, CVSA Roadcheck will take place May 16 — 18 in the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.

CMV inspections will take place at weigh/inspection stations, designated inspection areas, and along roadways. Inspectors will focus on both driver and vehicle safety compliance.

The area of emphasis for inspectors during this year’s Roadcheck campaign will be anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.

During inspection of ABS on a commercial motor vehicle, inspectors will:

• Determine whether ABS is required on the vehicle(s).
•  Ensure the ABS lamp cycles on and off for all ABS-required vehicles during the diagnostic check.
• Check for indications of an ABS malfunction, such as lamps remaining on during transit.

During inspection of cargo securement on a commercial motor vehicle, inspectors will:

• Ensure spare tires, loads, cargo and dunnage are secured and prevented from falling, blowing, spilling or leaking from the vehicle, or rolling or shifting in transit.
• Confirm there are enough tiedowns for the weight and length of the items being transported.
• Check for defective securement devices (e.g., loose, torn, damaged, bent, knotted tiedowns).
• Inspect anchor points and structures for damage.
• Verify commodity-specific cargo is secured in accordance with the regulations.

Roadcheck is the largest targeted enforcement program on commercial motor vehicles in the world, with nearly 15 trucks or buses inspected, on average, every minute across North America during a 72-hour period.

Other upcoming CVSA inspection events include:

• Operation Safe Driver Week is scheduled for July 9 — 15, 2023. During Operation Safe Driver Week, law enforcement personnel will be on the lookout for commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers engaging in risky driving.
• Brake Safety Week is scheduled for August 20 — 26, 2023. During Brake Safety Week, commercial motor vehicle inspectors conduct brake system inspections (primarily Level IV Inspections) on large trucks and buses throughout North America to identify brake-system violations.
• Unannounced one-day brake safety enforcement initiative — This can be held at any time during the year and also involves inspectors checking brakes to identify brake violations. The previous surprise brake safety day took place on April 27, 2022.
