The town of Moriarty, New Mexico is up in arms over the proposed development of a Pilot truck stop at the corner of Abrahame’s Road and N.M. 41.
While the permit has already been approved, the residents were allowed 2 minutes each to voice their concerns about the truck stop’s development.
Several residents who live close to the truck stop’s proposed location threatened lawsuits and cried, the Mt. View Telegraph reported.
Bryan Perry, who lives in a neighborhood close to the proposed Pilot location, told the city council that if the truck stop is built, home owners can expect to see a 30% depreciation rate on the value of their homes.
Resident Barbara Christian tearfully told the city council that if the truck stop is built she and her family will not be able to enjoy their home they way they used to, Mt. View Telegraph reported.
A few residents spoke out in favor of the truck stop, saying it would be good for the local economy.
Pilot Vice President of Facilities Bill Mulligan said the $7.5 million truck stop will be a clean and well-run facility that will provide jobs.
In the end, the city approved Pilot’s petition to build. The city also granted Pilot a waiver and is allowing the truck stop to install a 70 foot tall, 400 sq. ft., back-lit sign, even thought the city’s ordinance states no signs may be higher than 50 ft. tall.
