UPDATE: Police cite trucker after motorist slams into oversized load of steel beams

Published:

Police in Massachusetts have issued multiple citations to a truck driver following a crash on Monday that left a motorist with serious injuries.

The crash occurred on Monday, January 4, in Walpole, Massachusetts as a flatbed semi truck hauling an oversized load of 100 foot steel beams was backing into KW Steel Structures.

A 70 year old motorist reportedly failed to see the steel beams that were hanging off of the trailer into active lanes of traffic and crashed into them, shearing off the roof of his car and leaving him with serious injuries.

Rescue crews used a Jaws of Life to help remove the motorist from his wrecked vehicle.

Following an investigation into the incident, the truck driver was charged by both state and local police. The Walpole Police Department cited the driver for negligent operation of a motor vehicle. Massachusetts State Police cited the truck driver for operating with no warning flags on the beams, which reportedly extended 34 feet off the truck, and failing to secure the load.

“There are two escorts. I don’t know what they saw. I don’t know that they tried to stop him,” Harry Webster, of KW Steel Structures, told local news outlet WCVB shortly after the crash. “Right now, my biggest concern is with the driver.”
