A portion of Highway 1 in California was swept into the ocean following a major rainstorm last week. Recent video reveals an in-depth look at the destruction of the collapse.
The San Francisco Chronical released this aerial footage.
California Department of Transportation officials said in a statement that debris flow from the hillside above the roadway “overwhelmed drainage infrastructure, flowed across the highway, and eroded the road resulting in the complete loss of a segment of Highway 1” at Rat Creek, about 15 miles south of Big Sur.
Caltrans also released drone footage of the destruction and has started the clean-up and repair process.
