CBP: Trucker indicted for $18M worth of meth smuggling did so to pay off cousin’s debts

A truck driver has been indicted for attempting to smuggle $18 million worth of meth into the US from Mexico. 

33-year-old trucker Luis Alberto Garza Cisneros was caught with 120 gallons of liquid meth on May 6th in Laredo, Texas after hiding 24, 5 gallon buckets inside of his rig’s fuel tanks. Documents state that Cisneros told officials that he agreed to smuggle the contraband in order to help pay off his cousin’s debts. 

Cisneros was indicted on Thursday, June 9th after a federal jury returned a two-count indictment charging him with knowingly and unlawfully importing or attempting to import a controlled substance. He is currently facing a potential lifetime sentence and a possible $10 million maximum fine.
