Rebuilding efforts for the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore will begin in January after nine months of planning and negotiation.
The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland collapsed in the early morning hours of March 26th, 2024 after a large cargo ship crashed into the structure, sending a large portion of the bridge into the Patapsco River.
According to Washington Post, work crews are scheduled to begin underwater surveys on January 7th. Demolition of the remaining bridge structure will begin this spring. The entire construction project is expected to take years.
The rebuild project is expected to cost $1.7 billion, fully funded by the federal government after months of lobbying by Maryland lawmakers and Gov. Wes Moore.
“This action affirms the central importance of rebuilding the bridge not just to Maryland, but the nation,” Moore said in a statement about the federal funding. “This bipartisan agreement is a win for port workers, truckers, small businesses, service members and working families throughout Maryland and across America. And while the tragic collapse of the Key Bridge happened during our time in office, we will rebuild it on our watch.”
