Ryder System to join Schneider, Route 66 and others in offering jobs to veterans.
MIAMI, Apr 18, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) — Ryder System, Inc. R -0.44% , a leader in commercial transportation and supply chain management solutions, has launched a new military recruiting website at www.ryder.com/military to help veterans easily match their military skills with open positions at Ryder. The new website is part of Ryder’s military recruiting efforts, which includes a commitment to hire 1,000 military veterans by 2013.
At www.ryder.com/military , veterans can access an automated feature that enables them to search for jobs according to their specific Military Occupation Specialty (MOS) or Military Occupation Code (MOC). Once a veteran enters his or her MOS/MOC into Ryder’s search engine, it will automatically filter the search to display open positions at Ryder that specifically match that job code. The website also enables veteran applicants to search for jobs by geography, keyword, or job title. Ryder currently has more than 670 job openings across all states in the U.S.
“One of the key challenges facing veterans is understanding how to communicate their unique military experiences and skills in terms that are relevant to the civilian workforce,” states Kirk Imhof, Ryder’s Group Director of Staffing and former First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army, Military Intelligence Corps. “Using military terminology will make it easier for talented service members to immediately find and apply for jobs at Ryder for which they are uniquely qualified.”
Approximately eight percent of Ryder’s current U.S. workforce is made up of military veterans, including employees who are actively serving in the National Guard and reserve. As a leader in transportation and logistics, Ryder has long benefitted from hiring military veterans, drawing upon their distinct logistical, mechanical, and management skills learned through military service to help fill a variety of roles important to the company’s operations including diesel mechanics, professional truck drivers, logistics managers, and other professional support positions. Veterans not only have unique skills that enable them to deliver Ryder’s industry leading transportation and logistics services, but they also bring to the table other intangible qualities that support the company’s strategies to drive innovation, continuous improvement, and operational execution. In addition, Ryder hiring managers value the inherent leadership qualities in military personnel that align with the company’s focus on character, judgment, relationships, and results.
Reinforcing its ongoing commitment to hire U.S. military veterans, in 2011, Ryder announced that it had joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Veterans Employment Advisory Council. The Council was established as part of the U. S. Chamber’s Hiring Our Heroes program, an initiative focused on enhancing collaboration between the public and private sectors to improve career opportunities for veterans.
“We are thankful for the extraordinary men and women who make tremendous sacrifices while serving our nation,” continued Mr. Imhof. “We see great opportunities to support their transition back into the workforce by actively recruiting and filling open positions at Ryder with highly skilled military veterans.”
