A 39-year-old truck driver was struck and killed by a Maryland State Police officer on Wednesday in Garrett County, Maryland.

Authorities say at approximately 11:00 p.m.,Lamont Scaife pulled his disabled truck onto the eastbound shoulder of I-68 and was trying to unhook his trailer.  Scaife’s passenger said Scaife walked back from the trailer and opened the driver’s side door.  That’s when a piece of paper blew out of the cab.

Scaife ran onto the highway to retrieve the paper.  He ran through the merge lane and into the next lane.

At that same moment, Maryland State Patrol officer, Tfc. Scott Bell, was cresting the hill and hit Scaife.

The officer, Tfc. Scott Bell, swerved and tried to avoid hitting Scaife but was unsuccessful.

Following the collision, Bell radioed for help then began performing CPR on Scaife.

Scaife was transported to the hospital by an ambulance where he was pronounced dead.

The Maryland State Police CRASH team is investigating the accident.

The crash is the second fatal pedestrian accident involving a state trooper in a week.
