I-84 in Portland Weekend Closures Begin Tonight

Published:

The first of three weekend closures of Interstate 84 will begin at 10 p.m. Friday, July 12, as the Banfield Freeway paving project moves into high gear.

This summer, ODOT will re-pave I-84 between Interstate 5 and Interstate 205, a distance of 5.5 miles.

All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if there’s rain. Here is the closure schedule:

10 p.m. Friday July 12 to 5 a.m. Monday July 15 all eastbound lanes will be closed for grinding and paving.

10 p.m. Friday July 19 to 5 a.m. Monday July 22 all westbound lanes will be closed for grinding and paving.

11 p.m. Saturday Aug. 3 to 5 a.m. Monday Aug. 5 all westbound lanes will be closed for sign installation and restriping.

The Northeast Halsey Street overpass at 82nd Avenue also will be closed for two to three nights in July for paving and other repairs.

A variety of east-west alternate routes are available during the closures, including Lombard Street, Columbia Boulevard, Sandy Boulevard, Burnside Street and Powell Boulevard. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and map out an alternate route in advance, expect heavier traffic than usual on the alternate routes and take public transit when possible.

The project will also pave I-84 ramps, install new signs, restripe the westbound merge with northbound I-5 to improve safety and traffic flow and repave the Northeast Halsey Street overpass at 82nd Avenue.

The Oregon Department of Transportation is adding another lane, called an auxiliary lane, on Interstate 84 eastbound from the Halsey Street (exit 7) to Interstate 205 northbound (exit 8). Construction started in April and will finish by fall 2013.

The new exit-only auxiliary lane is being created by extending the current eastbound lane, which currently ends at the Halsey Street exit to the I-205 northbound exit. This new northbound I-205 exit lane is next to the current two eastbound through lanes.  Construction of this project will result in a smoother flow of traffic, reduce back-ups on I-84 and improved safety. For a map of the project location, click here or see below.

NE Halsey Street Overpass Closures

ODOT will also close the NE Halsey Street overpass at 82nd Avenue for 2-3 nights as part of this project. These closures are currently scheduled to occur during the week of July 8-12.
