The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration finalized a rule yesterday (June 3) that will require all heavy to trucks to have electronic stability control systems to reduce crashes.
Secretary of transportation Anthony Foxx applauded the new rule, saying that “Electronic stability control is a remarkable safety success story, a technology innovation that is already saving lives in passenger cars and light trucks.”
All trucks that weigh 26,000 pounds or more will be required use electronic stability control systems, which safety researchers say will help to reduce the chance of a rollover. The regulation goes into effect in August 2017.
The NHTSA says that the new rule will result in an estimated 1,700 fewer crashes per year, preventing up to 649 injuries and 49 fatalities. The cost of the systems will be about $585.
