Tollway driver killed in tractor-trailer hit and run

Around 12:23 p.m. yesterday, a tollway worked was hit and killed by a tractor-trailer near south suburban Alsip in Illinois.

According to Illinois State Police, “the man was outside of his vehicle picking up debris along the right shoulder. As he walked back to his car, a semi-truck pulling a trailer side swiped the worker and his car.”

The truck driver did not stop after the accident. The driver fled the scene.

The toll worker, a 48-year-old male, was killed on Interstate 294 southbound and 127th Street. His identity has not yet been released.

After the accident, the 2 right lanes were closed.

The victim’s coworker saw a tractor-trailer approaching their vehicle right before his partner was hit. He immediately called an ambulance.

 

The investigation into this accident is ongoing.

Police say that they aren’t sure how fast that the truck driver was traveling and that he or she did not stop after the crash.

According to the Daily Herald, “This is the first death of a tollway worker since April 2016, when a Berwyn father of four died after a beam fell on him during reconstruction of the Jane Addams Tollway (I-90) in Des Plaines.”
