Semi becomes disabled following U-turn attempt, leading to crash that killed car driver

Published:

The Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) is investigating a fatal weekend crash in Greene County that occurred following a truck driver’s U-turn attempt.

The crash occurred at 4:22 a.m. on February 11 on Highway 360 a mile west of Republic, Missouri.

According to MSHP, 59 year old Douglas Grimes of Missouri was behind the wheel of 2011 Peterbilt when he attempted to make a U-turn and became disabled with his truck blocking the roadway.

Missouri resident Gary Sawyer, 74, was operating a 2018 Taurus and struck the trailer of the disabled vehicle.

Sawyer was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grimes was uninjured.

While the crash remains under investigation by MSHP, local news outlet KOAM News Now says that the U-turn was performed illegally and shared images of a No U-Turn Sign at the fatal crash site.
