The Iowa State Patrol (ISP) has confirmed that two people lost their lives in a Sunday morning multi-vehicle crash on I-80.
The pileup occurred around 5:40 a.m. on January 8, 2023, near Iowa City.
ISP said that fifteen vehicles, including nine semi trucks and six passenger vehicles, collided in the westbound lanes of I-80 near mile marker 246.
“Even though the crash is still under investigation, we know that several drivers lost control of their vehicles and collided into each other,” ISP said.

Troopers reported that two people were killed and several others were injured.
“This crash demonstrates the importance of all drivers paying attention, every single minute, to road conditions and potential hazards ahead. Two families now have to adapt and accept a loved one never returning home. These types of crashes CAN often be avoided!” ISP said.
