CVSA Announces Brake Safety Week Dates

Published:

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance has announced that Brake Safety Week will take place from September 11 through September 17.

CVSA says that inspectors will be on the lookout for out-of-adjustment brakes and brake-system and anti-lock braking system violations during Brake Safety Week.

According to CVSA, many trucks will undergo a Level I inspection, though jurisdictions that have performance based brake checking equipment will be allowed to use it. Per federal law, the minimum brake efficiency allowed is 43.5%.

More specifically, inspectors will examine “brake-system components to identify loose or missing parts, air or hydraulic fluid leaks, worn linings, pads, drums or rotors, and other faulty brake-system components. ABS malfunction indicator lamps are also checked. Inspectors will inspect brake components and measure pushrod stroke where applicable.” Any brakes found to be out of adjustment or faulty will result in the truck being placed out of service.

During Roadcheck 2015, 43% of out of service orders were issued because of brake violations.
