This week at Fleet Owner, they reported that the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety (GOHS) had kicked off its annual November seatbelt enforcement “Click It Or Ticket” campaign. The highway safety campaign will run through Nov.25. The state will set up road blocks with no advance notification to the general public in order to enforce seatbelt laws.

“Seatbelts have saved more lives than any other single piece of automotive safety equipment,” said GOHS Director Harris Blackwood. “But in order for them to work, they have to be used and they have to be used correctly. This Thanksgiving weekend, and every day and night of the year, be sure to buckle your seatbelt and you’ll have the opportunity to unbuckle that other belt at the feast table with your family and friends.”

According to FMCSA’s Safety Belt Usage by Commercial Motor Vehicle Drivers Survey, the number of commercial drivers that are wearing safety belts has increased 14% since 2007. A 2010 survey observed 26,830 commercial drivers operating medium- to heavy-duty trucks and buses at 998 roadside sites nationwide. The survey found that safety belt use for commercial drivers and their occupants was higher, 80%, in states where law enforcement may stop drivers for not wearing a safety belt, versus 72% in states with weaker secondary enforcement belt use laws.
