Resources For Truck Drivers Struggling With Addiction

Published:

While most truck drivers are responsible and too smart to risk their jobs and their lives by abusing substances, this isn’t the case for all drivers. If you read the headlines, you’re aware that addiction is a problem in the trucking community. With all of the stress, pressure, and loneliness that drivers face every day, some are tempted to turn to drugs, alcohol, or even gambling in order to cope. Other drivers turn to substances to deal with the utter exhaustion that they face from too many hours on the road. Some even argue that substance use is a long-standing part of trucker culture.

According to a study of long-haul truckers, the most commonly used substances are alcohol, amphetamines, cannabis, and cocaine.

There are several factors that increase the risk for addiction among truck drivers:

  • Being a younger driver
  • Longer trips
  • Driving more at night than during the day
  • Being a regular alcohol drinker
  • Getting inadequate rest
  • Low wages
  • The belief that other drivers are using also engaging in addictive behavior
