Each year, the Colorado Department of Transportation shuts down the Virginia Dale rest area for the winter. This year, the rest area will close on September 9.
The Virginia Dale rest area is located on US 287 at the 383 mile marker, just south of the Colorado-Wyoming border.
“Given our unpredictable weather in Colorado, it is necessary to close the rest area before the first snow and winter temperatures arrive in order to prevent the water lines from freezing,” said CDOT Maintenance Supervisor Tom Aguilar. “When the warm temperatures arrive and the ground thaws, there will no longer be risk of the lines freezing and we will reopen the rest area.”
