Truck is leaking hazmat after colliding with bridge, promoting evacuations

Published:

Massachusetts State Police say that a truck is leaking hazardous materials after it hit and became stuck under a bridge in Worcester today.

The bridge strike occurred around 1 p.m. when a truck traveling on Cambridge Street struck the Providence & Worcester Railroad overpass, according to MassLive.

The impact of the crash crushed a barrel that the truck was hauling containing cumene hydroperoxide. The Massachusetts State Police say that the chemical is leaking from the truck. State hazmat teams have been asked to respond to the crash site. Police say that the chemical is an irritant and can become combustible if exposed to heat or certain materials.

Though the height of the bridge is marked at 12’6″, authorities say that truck strikes are common.
