I-39 in Illinois remains closed for 100 vehicle pileup

Illinois State Police (ISP) say that a portion of I-39 remain closed as of Friday morning for a major pileup crash that occurred during winter weather conditions on Thursday.

The initial crashes began shortly after 3 p.m. on February 17 on southbound I-39 at mile marker 14, south of El Paso, Illinois.

On Thursday afternoon, ISP said that “I-39 from Normal to Minonk will be closed for approx. 12 hours due to multiple crashes involving over 100 vehicles.”

ISP later clarified that 19 commercial vehicles and nine passenger vehicles were involved in a property damage crash, with numerous other vehicles sliding off the road. 

An ISP cruiser was also struck during the pileup.

ISP says that no injuries have been reported.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says that I-39 is expected to remain closed through midday on Friday and offered detours:
◼️ Northbound: Exit 8 to Illinois 251
◼️ Southbound: Exit 22 to Illinois 116 to Illinois 251
