Trucking Companies That Hire Felons
“Which trucking companies hire felons?” This is a question we get asked a lot. The truth is that the answer varies depending on how long ago the felony was committed and the type of felony that was committed.
First things first, if you haven’t gotten your CDL yet, talk to carriers and recruiters, and ask them if they hire felons. If your felony conviction was less than three years ago, you might want to consider waiting a couple more years to get your CDL before you spend thousands… only to find that you cannot get hired. Many companies won’t hire drivers if the felony conviction was less than five to ten years prior.
Do you have a driver’s license? Many– not all– carriers require you to have had a driver’s license for at least 1-3 years.
If you’re currently on probation or parole, your chances of getting a job as a truck driver are slim, because you will be prohibited from crossing state lines. Seek out local driving jobs.
If your felony conviction was for drugs, murder or manslaughter or sexually related, you may have a harder time finding a job as a truck driver. Many carriers have a “no-hire policy” for those types of crimes.
Because of insurance and liability concerns, if you were convicted of a DWI less than 3 years ago, you may not be able to find a job in trucking. If you’ve had 2 or more DWI convictions, you may have to wait 15 years to be a “qualified applicant.”
BE HONEST on your application. If your potential employer asks if you’ve ever been convicted of a felony, be honest and list your crime(s). Chances are, the prospective employer will find out anyway. Don’t waste their time or yours.
All that being said, all hope is not lost. If you have a felony record, approach smaller carriers first. The pay may be lower, but if you can put in 1-2 years as a dependable employee, this will help you get a better paying job in the future.
