After being closed for 5 years, New York officials have reopened the eastbound I-88 rest area in Worcester in one of the nation’s toughest states for finding truck parking.
The New York State Department of Transportation closed 6 rest stops in 2010 in an effort to save money — a move that led to protests from truck drivers who struggled to find adequate parking.
New York State Sen. James Seward said that it was an increase in crashes on I-88 that led him to seek funding to reopen the rest stop.
Seward hopes that the reopened rest stop will improve highway safety: “Reopening these rest stops will improve highway safety for all travelers, especially truck drivers who make their living driving our highways.”
Renovations cost $1.2 million and include new plumbing and electrical systems, in addition to a new backup generator.
