Drones: The Future of Online Purchase Deliveries?

Published:

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos has big plans for the future of the company.

In an interview with 60 Minutes, Bezos said he hopes that within the next 5 years the company will begin delivering packages within 30 minutes of ordering via drones.

Bezos said the packages would be pulled off the line by an octocopter.  The octocopter (drone) would then use GPS to deliver the package to the customer’s door.

Bezos said the technology to make this happen is already here, but the FAA has yet to set standards for drones.

“The hardest challenge in making this happen is demonstrating to the standards of the FAA that this is a safe thing to do. This is years of additional work at this point,” Bezos said.

The FAA may not have rules governing drones until 2015, Bezos said.

“I know this looks like science fiction — it’s not,” Bezos told CBS. “It will work and it will happen. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”
