Sleeping Driver Slams Into Truck

Published:

According to the CDC, 1 in 24 people surveyed admitted to falling asleep at the wheel and 4% of those interviewed said that they had done so in the lat 30 days.

Sparta, New Jersey police say that on Thursday, 24-year-old Renae K. Cianci fell asleep at the wheel and crossed the double yellows of Route 94 and slammed into an oncoming truck.

The truck’s driver, Jonathan D. Morris, 42, said he saw Cianci coming and tried to avoid the crash, but couldn’t. Cianci’s 2004 Nissan sedan struck the truck’s front driver side, then spun underneath the trailer and was run over by the left rear wheel.  The Nissan came to a stop after hitting the road’s guardrail.

Cianci had to be extricated from her car by the Jaws of Life.  She was airlifted to Morristown Medical Center with multiple leg and pelvis fractures.

Morris was uninjured.

Sparta Police told the Patch that Cianci will likely face charges.
