Texas City Mulling Stronger Anti-Idling Laws

Published:

A Texas city is mulling a bill that would strengthen idling laws.

The Houston City Council is considering an ordinance that would restrict how long CMV drivers may idle their vehicles while parked.

If passed, the ordinance would prohibit 2008 or older vehicles, weighing 14,000 or more pounds, from idling for more than 5 minutes. In addition, the law would not apply to vehicles that are running to defrost their windshields.

If passed, City Health Department investigators would write tickets to violators. The department has reportedly selected areas with high numbers of idling vehicles where they will focus their efforts.

The City Council is scheduled to vote on the ordinance on November 4.
