An Ohio rest area is closed until further notice after a box truck driver fell asleep and crashed into the restrooms.
Box Truck Didn’t Slow Before Crashing Into Rest Area Bathrooms
The incident took place just before 10 a.m. on Friday at a rest area on eastbound U.S. 30. According to the Ohio Highway Patrol, a box truck full of vegetables driven by 47 year old Wangtamah Oeg attempted to enter the rest area, but did not slow down. He reportedly drove over the center island, then travelled another 220 feet, taking down two signs and a vending machine before crashing into the restrooms.
Trucker Using Bathroom Escaped Injury
Another truck driver was using the restrooms at the time, but he was not injured.
Investigators found little evidence that Oeg had attempted to brake. A commercial vehicle inspector said that there were no brake defects on the box truck.
Police do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor.
Oeg was cited for driving a commercial vehicle with impaired awareness and failure to maintain control.
The rest area will be closed until further notice.
