Study: Too Much Or Too Little Sleep Increases Diabetes Risks For Men


A recent study by European researchers found that men who sleep too much or too little are at increased risk for developing diabetes.

In a study conducted by VU Medical Center in Amsterdam which surveyed almost 800 people from 14 different countries, researchers found that men who sleep either less or more than 7 hours per night show a decreased response to insulin, which increases the risk of diabetes. The study also found that sleeping more or less than 7 hours was associated with higher blood sugar levels.

More Sleep Isn’t Bad For Women, Say Researchers

Interestingly, the researchers did not find that the same was true for women. In fact, women who got more than 7 hours of sleep became more efficient at using insulin within their bodies, reducing their diabetes risks.

The study’s authors also note that in the past 50 years, the amount of sleep people get has gone down by 1.5 to 2 hours per night, while the prevalence of diabetes has doubled.

The study was published on June 29 in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism.
