A man was shot in the head and killed yesterday in Detroit after he was reportedly caught attempting to steal meat from a delivery truck.

The incident happened in the Eastern Market commercial district of Detroit, according to MLive.

According to Detroit Assistant Police Chief Arnold Williams, three delivery truck drivers from the same Ypsilanti-based company, Marshall Johnson’s Wholesale Meats, were all making deliveries at the same time to a warehouse at Riopelle and the Interstate 75 service drive when one of the truck drivers noticed that two men attempting to steal meat from the trailer of one of the trucks. The truck driver confronted the suspects and a fight ensued.

At one point, a driver of one of the other trucks, he sees the scuffle, he draws his weapon, he believed that one of the black males who was stealing meat has pulled a weapon — or was reaching for a weapon. At that point, he fired shot and we have one of the suspects who was stealing the meat being fatally wounded,” said Williams.

The other suspect escaped on foot.

One of the delivery truck drivers was struck in the leg by gunfire but the injury is not fatal.

The delivery truck driver who filed the fatal shot was also the owner of the company, according to the Detroit Free Press. He was taken into custody after the incident but it isn’t clear if charges will be filed.  It will be up to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether the shooting was justified.

Police say that neither suspect is believed to have been armed with a gun, but the man who was shot did have a box cutter.
